the images i do that size dont end up looking good really small :/
but i generally work bigger than what i have to, 500x500 for pets for e.g

I voted 80x80 because even though the larger images are nice, a smaller avatar will be easier to load when many are present at once.

You've gotta remember, though, that any image, as long as the dimensions are right, can be resized as small as you like. You could start with a 400px2 canvas and scale it down to 60px2. You'd lose a bit of detail, but it'd look just as fine. The issue is not with the quality, we're looking for a fast-loading solution.
